There are a variety of senior housing options available, which category is right for your parent? Review the following selections:

Continuum of Care: Luxury Living for the Young at Heart
These communities are often designed around recreational activities such as golf, swimming and fitness. Various levels of care are offered on a single campus, including cottages, independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing facilities. Residents many move to a different level as health concern progress without having to move across town to a new location.
The payment structure for the cottages and independent living facilities begin with an entrance fee, plus a monthly maintenance fee.
Examples of high end resort-type living amenities:
• Elegant meals with fine china and starched table clothes
• Workout room
• Swimming pool
• Town cars for transportation to appointments

Independent living: For Seniors Wanting to Live without Medical Servicesasian color
These are low maintenance independent living apartments, condominiums or town-homes. They are rented for a monthly fee with no entrance fee required.

Amenities may include:
• Housekeeping
• Self-service laundry
• Meal plans
• Numerous activities, e.g. trips, computer classes, cooking demonstrations and exercise
• Emergency pull cords to notify 911 or security of medical attention required
• Patios and balconies
• Lovely grounds
• Utilities included

Assisted Living: For Loved Ones Requiring 24/7 Care Oversight
Assisted living properties offer individual apartments with 24-hour personalized attention. The size may range from 6 or 8 residents to 100’s of apartments.

The services available are partially regulated by the State Health Department:
• Well balanced meals, plus healthy snacks
• Semiprivate rooms or studios, one and two bedroom floor plans
• Weekly housekeeping and laundry service
• Social activities
• Assistance with personal needs: bathing, dressing, medication management, toileting/incontinence care, escorting to meals
• Hospice care invited
• All utilities included, aside from phone and cable
• Transportation to appointments
• Caregivers on staff 24/7
• Physical, occupational and speech therapy are accessible

Alzheimer’s Memory Care Assisted Living: For Those with Memory Loss
Dementia assisted living is designed for the resident who is unsafe to live on their own. Consider this selection when you notice symptoms such as wandering from home, forgetting to turn the stove off, poor hygiene or unhealthy eating habits.
• Both large and small buildings are secured with touch pads for visitors
• Activity programs are individually designed in regard to past personal interests
• Residents may move freely on the secured courtyards
• Assistance with bathing, dressing, medication management during emotional, confused states of agitation, assistance with feeding, transferring from wheelchair to toilet
Skilled Nursing Facilities: For Senior Requiring 24/7 Medical and Rehabilitation Services
The skilled nursing buildings deliver services for those who have been discharged from a hospital but still require intensive physical, occupational aquatic and speech therapies. Stringent regulations are set by the State Health Departments on health life safety issues.

All establishments are required to provide:
• Three healthy meals per day
• Housekeeping
• Laundry service
• Nursing staff being either an RN or LPN, which supervises the care staff
• Medicare coverage

Long Term Nursing Facilities: For Loved Ones with Chronic Illness
Long term facilities have registered nurses on staff and are licensed to deliver 24-hour medical service to chronically ill individuals who do not require hospitalization. This is the highest level of nursing care available.
• Three healthy meals per day
Semi-private or private rooms
• Housekeeping
• Laundry service included
• Call light at each bed
• Medicaid coverage, depending on availability and license
• Assistance based on personal needs:medication management, bathing, dressing, escorting and incontinence, two staff members available for transferring from bed to chair or wheelchair to toilet, feeding assistance, injections

Alzheimer’s Long Term Nursing Facility: For Loved Ones with Memory Loss and Chronic Diseases
Staff working with dementia are offered special training to meet the need of this population.

Amenities offered:
• Alzheimer’s skilled nursing provides long-term, 24-hour highest care nursing
• Most facilities accept only “wandering” and very ill patients
• Three healthy meals per day
Semi-private or private rooms
• Housekeeping
• Laundry service included
• Call light at each bed
• Medicaid coverage, depending on availability and license
• Assistance based on personal needs: medication management, bathing, dressing, escorting and incontinence care, two staff members available for transferring from bed to chair or wheelchair to toilet, feeding assistance and injections
• Professional staff trained in caring for this special population
• Secured doors and windows
• Beautiful courtyards
PLEASE NOTE: The final level of placement for assisted living, skilled nursing and long term care is determined by the senior’s physical, along with a free assessment completed prior to admission.
